Yatala Vehera

Yatala Vehera is said to have been erected in the 3rd century BC by regional ruler Mahanaga on the site where his queen gave birth to a son.Various historical texts have named this stupa as Mani Chethiya and Yattalaya.
Mahanaga is King Devanampiyathissas younger brother 250-210 BC.When Mahanaga was overseeing the building of Walas Reservoir, the queen of Devanampiyathissa sent him a bowl of Mangos, with the topmost one poisoned, according to legend. Her plan was to assassinate Mahanaga in order for her son to inherit the kingdom when Devanampiyathissa died.At the time, the son was at the tank with his uncle, and the youngster ate the poisoned mango and died instantly.Fearing retaliation,he fled to Ruhuna with his pregnant wife, where he established his own regional empire around Magama.A statue of Avalokeshwara Bodhisattva,a Mahayana Buddhist idea mixed with Sri Lankan culture and Theravada theology, stands atop the stupas ground.
On the Hambanthota-Kataragama Road, between Debaraweva and Akurugoda,Yatala Vehera is about 1.5 kilometers from Tissamaharama Stupa and 10 minitues from Tara Watergate Hotel.
