The name Sithulpawwa is derived from the word Chittalapabbata which means the hill of the quiet mind.

The importance of such a name is exemplified by its history as a historic Buddhist monastery that dates back to King Kavantissas reign in the 2nd century B.C.Several religious structures are included in the onastery complex,including a cave with over 2000 year old murals and a temple atop a huge rock that rises above the surrounding landscape.

The ancient rock temple (a.k.a Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya) is a place of worship for devotees.It is believed that in ancient times this rock temple housed a total of 12000 monks.It has a breathtaking birds eye view of the entire region from the mountain.

It is also an area used for hiking for those who would are intrigued by history and also architecture,which consists of attractions like the stone umbrella,twin ponds,Buddha statues and other stupas on the summit.
